Slaughter in the home to protect the animals residing in it from harm

Fatwa number ( 17485 )
Q: My two uncles and I used to live in one house with our families for about fifty years. After a while, my uncles and their families left the house, and I remained with my family because I bought their share of the house, and the ownership of the house became mine. This house, O honorable Shaykh, since my uncles and my father were living in it, there was a vow (nadhr) that was slaughtered inside this house and distributed to the people of the village. My uncles and I do not know who established this vow, nor do we know the reason for its existence. However, in one of the years, harm from wild animals and snakes befell the livestock (cattle and sheep) that we owned. As far as we know, one of my uncles went to a soothsayer (fortune-teller) to find out the cause of that, and she told him that there is a slaughter to be performed inside the house, such that the blood flows from the upper floor to the lower floor, where the cattle and sheep are located, and that they must
act upon this. After that, many years later, I was on a trip in a region far from us, and during my trip, I met a soothsayer (fortune-teller) who told me: There is a vow that your family performs in your home located in such-and-such a region. Then she began to describe some landmarks that were actually true, which made me believe her. And at the end, she told me: You must carry out this matter—according to her claim—and if you do not carry it out, harm may befall you, your family, and your property. Therefore, I performed the slaughter in the recent years, and in the place she mentioned to me. Knowing that no one lives in the house now, and I am forced to go to this house, which is now in ruins, and perform the slaughter in it. My sons have advised me that this act is not permissible because it is forbidden (haram), but I fear that harm may befall my children or my property as a result of my not performing it. So what is obligatory upon me?

A : This slaughter in the aforementioned house is shirk (associating partners with Allah) with Allah the Mighty and Majestic; because it is slaughtered as a means of drawing near to the jinn out of fear of their evil. Therefore, it is not permissible to do it, and repentance to Allah from it is obligatory, along with the belief that benefit and harm are in the hand of Allah the Exalted and Supreme, and that no one else possesses any benefit or harm. Allah the Exalted said:
Say, "Then have you considered what you invoke besides Allah? If Allah intended me harm, are they removers of His harm; or if He intended me mercy, are they withholders of His mercy?" Say, "Sufficient for me is Allah; upon Him [alone] rely the [wise] reliers."
[Az-Zumar 39:38]

And Allah the Exalted said:
Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrificeقُلْ إِنَّ صَلاَتِي وَنُسُكِي
[Al-An'am 6:162]
meaning my slaughter
my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds. (163) No partner has He. And this I have been commanded, and I am the first [among you] of the Muslims."وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ (162) لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَبِذَلِكَ أُمِرْتُ وَأَنَا أَوَّلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ
[Al-An'am 6:162-163]
, and Allah the Mighty and Majestic said:
(1) Indeed, We have granted you, [O Muhammad], al-Kawthar. (2) So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone].إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ (1) فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ
[Al-Kawthar 108:1-2]
, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah cursed him who sacrificed for anyone besides Allahلعن الله من ذبح لغير الله
Sahih Muslim 1978b
It was narrated by Muslim in his (Sahih) from the hadith of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
