The Custom of Slaughtering on the Day of 'Arafah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 20447 )
Q: What is the ruling in the Shari'ah regarding people who slaughter an animal on the day of 'Arafah as a regular practice, even though they are not pilgrims, and they call this animal "I'rafiyyah," slaughtering it with the intention that its reward goes to their deceased relatives, such as a parent, a child, or a brother?
A : It is not permissible to make slaughtering on the day of 'Arafah a regular practice as an act of worship, because it is a religious innovation (bid'ah), whether one intends the reward of this animal to go to the deceased or to others; because there is no evidence for this in the Shari'ah. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملا ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
