Ruling on severing family ties to ward off a certain harm

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 11620 )
Q: We are from the town of Satairah in al-Aflaj and there is an uncle who wishes nothing for us but that every deed be useless. He does not love us and loves to stay away from us. He loves to talk a lot about the reputations of others and carry that talk from place to place and from person to person. So he went to some of the people for a visit, and he spoke there about the reputation of his brother, his brother's mahrams, and his brother's children. He told them: "My brother's children are doing and committing ugly deeds." This was to make the people around us hate us, and all of this is a lie upon a lie. He loves to sow enmity and hatred between his brother's children and the others around us. So for about half a year now, my brothers and I have left him aside. We do not acknowledge him, we do not value him, we do not respect him, and we do not greet him. So after my father's absence, my mother did what my father used to do, and praise be to Allah that my father and my mother live a happy married life. And it happened one day—my father was absent—that we had a gathering of our relatives. After that, my uncle said to my mother: "She is a sorceress and she has cast a spell on my son Ali"—meaning that my mother took the place of my father—and
my uncle's hatred and enmity increased after accusing my mother of sorcery—Allah is sufficient for me against him—but Allah turned him back and exposed him. Because the people he spoke to were our well-wishers, and our relationship with each other was good. They said to him: "Do you not fear Allah?" They scuffled with him and drove him out of the rest of the visit. They told him: "We will go to your brother's children and inform them of your ugly news, and we will tell them what you told us." And they came to our house and told us what he said. And after that, I ask my question, O His Eminence Shaykh Abdul Aziz ibn Baz: Do we bear sin in severing this uncle, and how do we greet a person like this? Guide me to what I should do and what I should say to one who does such a deed? May Allah reward you with good.

A : Maintaining family ties is obligatory and severing them is forbidden, but if it is your predominant opinion that the benefit lies in cutting off the aforementioned uncle due to the harm he has shown toward you, then there is no blame on you for that. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
