The Ruling on a Brother Severing Ties with His Brother

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Among the questions of this questioner, he says: “O His Eminence the Shaykh, my brother and I have been in a dispute for several years. When I walk on the road, I say to my brother, ‘As-salamu alaykum,’ but he does not return my greeting. This has happened several times. We have reconciled several times, but this reconciliation has not been of any benefit with him. I say that this greeting is from my heart and is not mere politeness in front of people. My brother does not pray in the mosque and commits some acts of evil. What is obligatory for me regarding him?”

Answer:
It is obligatory for you to advise him, to enjoin what is right, and to forbid what is wrong, so that perhaps Allah will guide him through your means. If it is possible for another person, or two, from among the relatives or friends to be with you, you all go to him, advise him, and direct him to good, then that is better; because he may benefit from it if there is someone else with you who helps you in advising him. For Allah says:
The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrongوَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتُ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ بَعْضٍ يَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنكَرِ
[Surah al-Tawbah: 71].
The believers are allies, and among their alliance with one another is that they enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong. So do not boycott him, but strive in advising him and directing him to good, even if he boycotts you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Al-Wasil is not the one who recompenses the good done to him by his relatives, but Al-Wasil is the one who keeps good relations with those relatives who had severed the bond of kinship with him.ليس الواصل بالمكافي، ولكن الواصل الذي إذا قطعت رحمه وصلها
Sahih al-Bukhari 5991
.
So you must strive to maintain ties with him, to be kind to him, to advise him, and to direct him to good; so that perhaps Allah will guide him, perhaps Allah will return him to the right path, and perhaps Allah will guide him to abandon the acts of evil. Let there be someone with you who helps you in that and assists you, so that perhaps he will accept it from you all, and perhaps he will take a lesson. If you do not find that the admonition works, and he continues to openly commit acts of evil, he deserves to be boycotted; he deserves to be boycotted.
As for if the sin is a hidden one between him and himself, and his family inside, and it is not an apparent sin, then do not boycott him. Strive in advising him and directing him to good. May Allah reward you with good, and be glad with good, and pray for him in his absence that Allah will guide him, and that Allah will protect him from the evil of his own self. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you.
