The Ruling on Severing Family Ties
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fifth question of Fatwa No. ( 5953 )
Q: Who are the relatives, and what is the ruling on one who severs his family ties?
A5: Those with whom one has kinship ties are: everyone connected to you by blood; such as the parents, the grandfather, and the grandmother, however far removed; and the child and the child of the child, whether male or female, however far removed; and the brothers and sisters and their children; and the paternal uncles and aunts and their children. Severing the tie with any of them without a valid Shari'ah cause is a major sin; for Allah the Exalted said:[Muhammad 47:22-23] And in the authentic hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sunan Abi Dawud 1696Sahih (Al-Albani) Narrated by Muslim in (his Sahih). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

(22) So would you perhaps, if you turned away, cause corruption on earth and sever your [ties of] relationship? (23) Those [who do so] are the ones that Allah has cursed, so He deafened them and blinded their vision.
Anyone who cuts off relationship from his nearest relatives will not enter Paradise.
