Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 14102 )
Q: What is the ruling on one who severs family ties from his relatives ? Especially if
these relatives do not respect the teachings of the messengers, such as demanding that we shake hands with them and attend their mixed gatherings, and we refuse all of that because it is forbidden, knowing that severing family ties is considered one of the major sins. I ask Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Baz to answer this question with a satisfactory response. May Allah reward you with the best reward.
A : Maintaining family ties is obligatory; as He the Exalted said:[An-Nisa 4:36] But one does not attend their mixed gatherings, if he is unable to forbid the evil. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives
وَاعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَلاَ تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا وَبِذِي الْقُرْبَى
