Q: My mother is blind, but Allah has compensated her with the light of insight, praise be to Allah. My mother had a legal inheritance share from her only maternal uncle, so she went to him and asked for her right to the legal inheritance in the properties. Then my uncle refused to give her her right this year, and told her: after a year or two or more, without specifying a time limit. So my mother and I went to the court after people came to resolve it peacefully, but he refused categorically. So we went to the Sharia court and submitted a petition, and praise be to Allah, my mother received her inheritance. But my uncle took a stance against my mother; he did not speak to her, did not greet her, cut her off, and did not visit us at our home. So I and my mother went to him to reconcile with him, going back multiple times instead of once, but he has not returned a single visit to this day. I always reminded my mother of the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Abi Dawud 1696Sahih (Al-Albani) . And we would take her and go to reconcile with him. Our Lord (Glorified and Exalted is He) decreed for us an 'Umrah, and a week before our departure I said to my mother: Let's go
to visit my uncle for the sake of the 'Umrah, may Allah accept it. She said: Let's go. We went and informed them of our travel date, and we traveled, but they did not come to our home to bid us farewell. Then, by the grace of Allah, we performed the rituals of 'Umrah, and then we stayed until the time for Hajj. During the rituals of Hajj, I met my uncle, my uncle's mother, and my mother in Mina, and we greeted each other and reconciled. But when we returned to Egypt , the days of the past and the severance returned, and my uncle has not entered our home to this day, nor has he greeted my mother in front of people or in our home. My mother said: I will not go to him again, because I am blind and he is sighted; who goes to the other by Allah? I am not going to him a second time. I have been here in the Kingdom for a long time, and I sent him messages but he did not reply to my messages. Please advise us, may Allah reward you: Should I cut him off as he cut off my mother? Note: My father said to her: Do not be upset, the house is welcome to you, he did not come to the welcome, and do not be upset. My mother became ill over this matter, and my father said to her: Do not go to him again. The severance has lasted seven years to this day. So guide us: Should I cut him off? What should I do so that the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) does not apply to me or to my mother:Sunan Abi Dawud 1696Sahih (Al-Albani) . And peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
A : It is obligatory for you to visit your uncle; out of dutifulness to him, maintaining family ties, and seeking the pleasure of Allah. You should encourage your mother to do so; because the one who maintains ties
is not the one who reciprocates a visit with a similar visit, but rather the one who maintains ties is the one who reconnects when his kinship is cut off, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained in his saying:Sahih al-Bukhari 5991 . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
