The questioner : He says: I have an uncle and an aunt who have problems with my mother, who wishes them well, and they often speak ill of my mother and insult her. Because my mother does not like severing family ties, she wants to maintain ties with them, but they do not want to meet her or speak with her. Please note that my uncle has cut off ties with my father for more than seven years. What is your opinion, Shaykh Muhammad, and what should my mother do? May Allah reward you with good.
The Shaykh : It is obligatory for your mother to maintain ties with these relatives who have cut her off, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This means that the one who maintains ties is not the one who only maintains ties with those who maintain ties with him, but rather the one who maintains ties when his kinship is cut off. So, if she maintains ties with them while they cut her off, she earns reward for maintaining ties, she earns reward for being patient with their cutting her off, and she earns reward for being patient with the insults and other things they say about her. Let her continue maintaining ties and let her seek reward from Allah the Exalted for the harm that comes to her from these relatives.
The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh, and may Allah bless you and your knowledge, and benefit the Muslims through you.
The Shaykh : It is obligatory for your mother to maintain ties with these relatives who have cut her off, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The one who maintains ties is not the one who reciprocates
