Summoning the Spirits
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 16455 )
Q: We observe the spread of the practice of summoning spirits, especially in university dormitories and on the beaches during the summer season. One time, I entered a tent on the beach with some of my colleagues and mocked this practice. The cup moved and gave my name and surname... etc., so I believed in it for a period. What is the scientific explanation for this phenomenon? What is the religious explanation for it? And what is the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding it and those who perform it?
A: Summoning the spirits is a Satanic act and a use of the jinn that contradicts the belief in the oneness of Allah (tawhid); because it does not occur except through acts of associating partners with Allah (shirk). The one who speaks and provides the information mentioned in the question is not the spirits, but rather the devils who speak these things to mislead the children of Adam. As for the spirits, no one can summon them except Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). Therefore, it is obligatory to believe in the invalidity of this act and to deny it, and not to attend it or believe in it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
