Q2: There is a group of people who treat illnesses using folk medicine, according to their own claims. When I went to one of them, he said to me: Tell me your name and your mother's name, then come back on such-and-such day. When I returned, he told me: You are afflicted with such-and-such. One of them says that he uses the words of the Lord in treatment. What is your opinion of such people, and what is the ruling on going to them?
A2 : This man and those like him who claim that he knows the patient is afflicted with such-and-such merely by taking the patient's name and his mother's name, or that he uses the words of the Lord in treatment, is one of the practitioners of fortune-telling and sorcery. It is obligatory to advise him and warn him against his work, and to order him to repent sincerely to Allah. If he repents, well and good; otherwise, his case must be referred to the competent authorities to prevent his harm from reaching people. It is forbidden to go to this man and those like him; for what was narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan al-Bayhaqi 15:740 (peace and blessings be upon him). It was recorded by the authors of the Sunan and al-Hakim, and he graded it as authentic. Accordingly, whoever goes to fortune-tellers and diviners and believes what they say about the unseen, he commits disbelief that takes him out of the religion, and may Allah protect us from that; for Allah the Exalted said:
[An-Naml 27:65] . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
