Ruling on Consulting Fortune-Tellers and Diviners

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q285: The questioner asks: What is the ruling on consulting fortune-tellers and diviners and seeking treatment from them, after we have failed to find a cure through other means or methods?
A285: It is not permissible to seek healing from sorcerers,
and fortune-tellers, diviners, and astrologers; because this is shirk (associating partners with Allah) with Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and engaging in what is not permissible. Allah has not made our healing in what He has forbidden for us. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
so treat yourselves medically, but use nothing unlawful.تداووا ولا تداووا بحرام
Sunan Abi Dawud 3874Da'if (Al-Albani)
So going to sorcerers, fortune-tellers, and deceptions is among the greatest of what is forbidden. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
or who goes to a fortuneteller and believes what he says, he has disbelieved in that which was revealed to Muhammad.من أتى كاهناً أو عرافاً فسأله، فصدقه بما يقول فقد كفر بما أنزل على محمد
Sunan Ibn Majah 639Hasan (Darussalam)
And in Sahih Muslim:
Whoever visits a fortune-teller, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days.من أتى كاهناً لم تقبل له صلاة أربعين يوميا
This is a severe warning, so it is not permissible to visit them. These people have no cure; they are liars who corrupt your religion and your creed, and they lie to you. Perhaps you will be tested and receive some healing, as a trial and test. So Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) has not made us in need of what is forbidden; rather, He has made us self-sufficient with what is lawful, away from what is forbidden, as in the hadith:
Allah has not sent down a disease except that He has sent down for it a cure; some people know it and some people do not know it.ما أنزل الله داء إلا أنزل له دواء، عَلِمَهُ مَنْ عَلِمَهُ وَجَهِلَهُ مَنْ جَهِلَهُ ".
