Fatwa No. ( 7843 )
Q1: I have a minor daughter whom I married to a man named (A. M). After a period of time, a dispute arose between them, and she was declared defiant for a year. Throughout the dispute between the wife and husband, and his bad treatment, I swore by the Great Allah that if they reconcile after that, I will not greet that husband, and that I will not enter their house. After that, they reconciled and agreed, and the husband came and greeted me by force, but I did not accept that. I also do not want to cut off ties with my daughter; I want to enter her house and greet her husband. Please rule for us on this: Is it permissible for me to enter their house and greet my daughter’s husband after I swore by Allah, or is there no sin on me in doing so, or is it not permissible for me to do so? What is required of me, and how should I act? Please rule for us, may Allah reward you with the best reward.
A1: Enter his house and greet him to maintain family ties and to avoid severing them, then expiate your oath by feeding ten poor people, or
clothing them, or freeing a believing slave. If you cannot do any of that, fast for three days. Distributing five sa’ (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of wheat, rice, or dates among ten poor people, giving each poor person half a sa’, is sufficient for the feeding. The amount of five sa’ is approximately 15 kilograms.
Q2: I have a husband who divorced me with a revocable divorce. After days and months, he took me back, and I had left his house to another place and taken some of the furniture that was in the house. After he took me back with a new contract and new money, I swore by Allah that I would not return any of that furniture to my husband’s house. I am now in need of that furniture. Is it permissible for me to take it to my husband’s house or not, and what is required of me if I take it, or take some of it, or if someone else takes it to my husband’s house? Please inform us, may you be rewarded with good.
A2: It is permissible to return it, or some of it, to the husband’s house. After that, you must expiate your oath by Allah with the expiation for an oath, as mentioned in the answer to the first question. You must also guard your tongue from frequent swearing. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
