The first question of Fatwa number ( 20444 )
Q 1: I became a guest at the home of one of the group, and I said, “It is forbidden; I will not eat the slaughtered animal at your place.” After a short while, another person—a guest—arrived, and the host slaughtered an animal. I ate with them from that animal. Please guide me on what I should do. Do I have to pay an expiation or do something else?
A 1: If your intention in taking the oath was not to eat from a specific animal slaughtered for you at this man’s place, then you owe nothing when you ate from an animal that was not slaughtered for you. However, if your intention in taking the oath was to refrain from eating any slaughtered animal at this man’s place, then you must pay the expiation for an oath when you ate at his place. The expiation is: feeding ten poor people half a sa’ (a dry measure of about 3 kg) each, which is approximately one and a half kilograms, or clothing them, or freeing a believing slave. If you are unable to do any of these, then you must fast for three days. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
