Treatment with Opium
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The third question of Fatwa No. ( 3201 )
Q3: Is it permissible to treat with opium and other beverages that contain a percentage of khamr (intoxicants), such as vinegar?
A3 : It is not permissible to treat with what Allah has forbidden, such as opium, hashish, khamr (intoxicants), or similar narcotics or intoxicants. Placing a percentage of such substances in medicine is not permissible; however, if it is placed in it and does not bring the medicine to the level where a large amount would cause intoxication, then it is permissible to treat with it, because the added amount has no effect, so it is as if it were nonexistent. As for vinegar, if its origin was not khamr (intoxicants), or if its origin was khamr (intoxicants) but it turned into vinegar naturally, then it is not a narcotic or an intoxicant, so it is permissible to treat with it and to consume it as a condiment or with food. However, if its origin was khamr (intoxicants) and it turned into vinegar through manufacturing, then it is not permissible to produce it in that way, nor to benefit from it as medicine or as a condiment. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
