A house built by its owner with forbidden earnings: what should be done with it?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fourth question of Fatwa No. ( 7890 )
Q4: A man gathered money from lawful and unlawful sources, and built a house with it, lived in it, and rented out the remaining apartments of the house. Then he repented to Allah—as he says—with a sincere repentance. So what does he do with the house? Knowing that he is in a country that is suffering from a housing crisis, should he give its income in charity, or what does he do, given that the unlawful has become mixed with the lawful?
A4: He must return the unlawful money to its owners or their heirs. If he is unable to do so because he does not know them or for a similar reason, he should give it in charity on behalf of its owners to the poor, along with repentance
and seeking forgiveness, regret for what occurred, and the resolve not to return to it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
