Is there any remnant of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) household in our time, and is it permissible for one who claims to be from the People of the House to claim that he is a close friend of Allah and to visit villages, with the people of the village offering him gifts and sacrifices seeking blessing?

The questioner : We have in Sudan a group of people who call themselves the People of the House of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). This group engages in actions that have no basis in the Shari'ah, as they claim to be righteous close friends of Allah. From time to time, they travel through the regions of the country, and the common people receive them with chants and greetings, offering them gifts and sacrifices, even though they are in great need of them, believing that these offerings bring them blessing and good from this group. Is there any remnant of the People of the House of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in our time? And are these actions they perform permissible? As well as the way they are received?

The Shaykh : Simply put, we say to these claimants who assert they are from the lineage of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): prove it to us with conclusive evidence from a historical perspective. It is well known that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not have any sons who reached maturity, married, and had children. Rather, the sons attributed to him are not his sons by direct descent. Therefore, we say to everyone who claims to be from the People of the House among these people: prove it to us from a historical perspective. If they fail to provide proof, the falsity of their claim and their lie becomes apparent. If it is established from a historical perspective, we say: being from the descendants or the People of the House of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) does not benefit you in any way if you are not upon his Shari'ah. What is important is that you are upon the Shari'ah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). If you are truly upon his Shari'ah, then you have the right of Islam and the right of kinship with the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Mere kinship with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) does not avail anything. Thus, Abu Lahab, the uncle of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and brother of his father, did not benefit from his closeness to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in any way. Rather, Allah the Exalted revealed a complete chapter of the Qur'an regarding his disgrace until the Day of Resurrection:
(1) May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he. (2) His wealth will not avail him or that which he gained. (3) He will [enter to] burn in a Fire of [blazing] flame (4) And his wife [as well] - the carrier of firewood. (5) Around her neck is a rope of [twisted] fiber.
[Al-Masad 111:1-5]
The conclusion is that we need to prove this claim from a historical perspective. Then, if it is established, we look at the state of these people. If they are truly righteous and walk upon the Shari'ah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in appearance and in reality, then they have the right of Islam and the right of kinship with the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). If they are not so, then they are deceptions and do not deserve anything, nor is there any blessing in their actions or their conditions. It appears that as long as this group walks through the villages and among the naive people, claiming what they claim, it is apparent that they are liars in what they claimed and that they are not upright in what is required of them in the Shari'ah of Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He. In that case, they do not deserve any honor, exaltation, or being given gifts and the like.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
