Q: I quarreled with my wife two years ago, not for a major reason or problem, but simply because she was frowning and angry all day. When I asked her the reason, she did not answer me. In any case, the discussions between us escalated and became heated until I struck her on the cheek with my open palm. My mother heard the quarrel, which made me tense and I said in words: “By Allah, I must divorce her, by Allah, I must divorce her,” approximately two or three times, as I recall, and in a moment
of agitation and saying these big words, I felt that I was saying them from my heart and truly intended them. At that time, I was crying due to a feeling of disappointment in not being successful in choosing a righteous wife, as I had proposed to another woman before her for a year and was not successful due to minor differences. Two days after this quarrel, things became very normal, and she did not leave the house. Praise be to Allah, everything is fine, and I have not separated from her until now. We have a son who is one and a half years old, and a baby is on the way. Knowing that I am religiously committed and do not leave any obligatory act of Islam, what is the ruling in the religion regarding the words of divorce I said but did not carry out and did not separate from? Because I am afraid and very worried about this matter.

A: If the matter is as you described, no divorce takes effect on your wife by your saying: “By Allah, I must divorce her.” But you must pay the expiation for an oath for your swearing to divorce her. The expiation is: freeing a believing slave, or feeding ten poor people, or clothing them. If you find none of that, then fast for three days. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
