Q: I was in an Arab country, which is Lebanon , and I got to know a woman who had a son two and a half years old. She was seven months pregnant and was far from her family because of the war. When I asked her about her husband, she said: He divorced me, and she had given birth to a daughter, so she had a son and a daughter. After that, I proposed marriage to her according to the way of Allah and His Messenger, and she agreed and said to me: What shall I do with my children? I said to her: I will write them under my name. She agreed, and that was done between us, and no one knows of this matter except Allah, then me and her. Allah blessed me with a son and a daughter from her after that, and I took them with me and we lived in happiness and joy. I began to memorize the Noble Qur'an for my children, and when I reached Surat al-Ahzab and the saying of the Exalted:
Call them by [the names of] their fathers; it is more just in the sight of Allahادْعُوهُمْ لآبَائِهِمْ هُوَ أَقْسَطُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ
[Al-Ahzab 33:5]
, the truth of Allah
the Mighty, I began to think about this noble verse, and I asked some of the shaykhs, but none of them directed me to a definitive answer. Is what I did forbidden or lawful? Knowing that none of my family or my village knows of this matter, and what is the sin of the children in this matter, and society does not show mercy? So I ask for the information and a definitive answer, may Allah reward you with good.

A: If the matter is as mentioned, it is obligatory to attribute the children to their legal father, and it is not permissible for you to attribute them to yourself; because of the saying of the Exalted:
Call them by [the names of] their fathers; it is more just in the sight of Allahادْعُوهُمْ لآبَائِهِمْ هُوَ أَقْسَطُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ
[Al-Ahzab 33:5]
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
