Is a woman forbidden to a son and his children if his father contracted marriage with her?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is a letter we received from the questioner Mu'ajjib Muhsin Husayn al-Qahatani. In his letter, he says: My father sought to marry a woman, and I agreed. After the marriage contract was concluded and the wedding requirements were brought, such as gold, jewelry, and other items known as the dowry equipment, on the wedding night the woman refused the marriage to my father or the marriage with my father, and she rejected it. So, what did he do but ask that his money be returned to him. The point is, does this woman become a mahram (forbidden relative) to me merely by the contract, or is it permissible for me to marry her?
Answer: When a man contracts marriage with a woman, even if he does not consummate the marriage, she becomes forbidden to his sons and the sons of his sons, as long as they are born; because of the saying of Allah, the Exalted: [Surat al-Nisa: 22]. Therefore, merely contracting marriage with a woman makes her forbidden to the sons of the one who contracted the marriage; because she has become the wife of their father, so she is not permissible for them in any way, not for their sons, nor for the sons of their sons, nor for the sons of their daughters. All of his descendants are not permitted to marry this wife. Yes.

And do not marry those [women] whom your fathers married, except what has already occurred. Indeed, it was an immorality and hateful [to Allah] and was evil as a way.
