What is the ruling on the two rak'ahs between the first adhan and the second adhan before the Friday khutbah?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : What is the ruling on the two rak'ahs that people pray before the first adhan and the second adhan prior to the Friday khutbah? And what is the ruling on the two rak'ahs that people pray when they intend to enter the miqat for Hajj or 'Umrah?
The Shaykh : First: Know that the first adhan on Friday day is not to be advanced before the second adhan except by a time that allows people to attend the Friday prayer from afar. The reason for the prescription of this adhan is that the people increased in number during the time of the Commander of the Faithful, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and the city expanded, so he saw fit to add this adhan so that people from afar could attend. There is no doubt that 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was one of the Rightly Guided Caliphs whom we were commanded to follow the Sunnah of, and the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did not disapprove of his action. Thus, this action is indicated by the Sunnah and by the lack of opposition from the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded following the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs. However, as I said: it should be advanced by a time that enables those far away to attend the prayer. As for it being close to the second adhan such that there is only five minutes or similar between them, this is not prescribed. Most people who volunteer two rak'ahs do so when the first adhan is close to the second adhan, but this is from religious innovations, meaning the voluntary prayer between these two close adhan, because that is not known from the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), so a person should not pray these two rak'ahs.
And based on this, we say: This answer actually contains two answers. The first answer is that there should be a time between the first and second adhan on Friday day in which people can attend the mosque from afar, not that the second adhan immediately follows the first.
As for the second answer: it is the prayer of the two rak'ahs between the close adhan, as is done by many people, and this is from religious innovations.
