Q: My problem is summarized as follows: One day I was with a friend of mine, and he told me a secret and asked me not to tell anyone. I made a pledge to myself not to tell anyone, so I said to him: “It is haram (forbidden) for me to tell anyone.” By haram, I meant that my family, i.e., my wife, would become forbidden to me if I told anyone. After a short time, I met another person and told him the secret my friend had told me, due to my ignorance and forgetfulness. Thus, I revealed the secret I had pledged not to disclose. What made the matter worse is that I went to my family and did not remember that pledge I had broken until after I had satisfied my desire with my wife. I hope you will find a solution for me; may Allah reward you and preserve you as a treasure for Islam and Muslims.
A: If the situation is as you described, that you revealed the secret out of forgetfulness and had intercourse with your wife while forgetting the prohibition and the pledge, then you owe nothing;
because Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Baqarah 2:286] the verse, and it is authentic from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, said: The meaning is that He answered the supplication mentioned. However, you must keep the secret for the rest of your life. If you were to reveal it intentionally while remembering your pledge, you would be obligated to pay the expiation for an oath if you had intercourse with your wife, because this prohibition of yours is legally equivalent to an oath. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
