Fatwa number ( 11213 )
Q: I traveled with my colleagues from Tabuk heading to al-Madinah al-Munawwarah and Makkah al-Mukarramah to perform the lesser pilgrimage, and by divine decree and destiny, an accident occurred that resulted in the death of one of my colleagues. Indeed, the deceased's family demanded blood money from me, and I was in prison. Also, my brothers made donations regarding the payment of the blood money, and they collected a small amount. Fortunately, I was in prison when the royal pardon covered me, and I was released from prison. Now I want to inquire about the amount my brothers collected as donations from various tribes, ranging from 10 to 100 riyals. I ask you to inform me: is this amount permissible for me to keep or not?
A: It is obligatory for you to return the amounts you took to the people from whom you took them. You must pay each person what was taken from him, whether little or much, if that is possible; because the reason for taking it has ceased. However, if they donated it to you after they knew of your pardon, it is permissible for you to take it.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
