The first and second questions of Fatwa No. ( 2586 )
Q1: Is it permissible for a man to marry his paternal uncle’s wife, and what is the term for
a paternal uncle’s wife in the Arabic language? And what is the meaning of: in the Noble Qur’an?
A1: Yes, it is permissible for a man to marry his paternal uncle’s wife; because Allah the Exalted listed those whose marriage is forbidden in His saying:[An-Nisa 4:22-23] up to His saying: [An-Nisa 4:24] Then He said: [An-Nisa 4:24] the verses. And a paternal uncle’s wife is called in the Arabic language as you mentioned in your question. The paternal uncle (al-'amm) is the father’s brother, whether he is a full brother, a brother on the father’s side, or a brother on the mother’s side, and whether he is a close relative or a distant one. And the meaning of the paternal aunt (al-'ammah) in the Arabic language is: the father’s sister, whether she is a full sister, or a sister on the father’s side only, or a sister on the mother’s side only. And His saying the Exalted: the intended meaning is: the father’s sister, whether she is a full sister, or on the father’s side, or on the mother’s side, and whether they are close relatives or distant ones. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
