Fatwa number ( 18040 )
Q: My wife's mother passed away when she was not yet a year old, and her sister raised her until she got married. Is her sister's husband a mahram to her or not? Please note that he was the one who raised her and provided for her while she was in his care.
A: The sister's husband is not considered a mahram to his wife's sister simply because he was the one who took her in and raised her; therefore, she is a non-mahram to him, and it is not permissible for him to be alone with her or do similar things, unless his wife breastfed her sister five times or more within the first two years, in which case he would be her father through breastfeeding and would be a mahram to her due to the milk kinship. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
