Obedience to the husband is obligatory, and it is obligatory to seek his permission when going out

Q: I am a married woman with a child—praise be to Allah. There were minor disagreements between me and my husband. One day, I called my older sister on the phone and told her about the disagreements between me and my husband. She replied to me saying: "Leave your child with him and go to your family, just as so-and-so's wife did: she left her child with her husband when he was twenty days old, and you should do the same." She also said: "If you quarrel again, throw a knife or a hand axe at your husband." When I told her what had happened between me and my husband, I thought she would give me good advice and worry about my future. I did not think she wanted my ruin. So I was very angry at her words, and she cursed my husband, saying: "He is the son of fornication and the son of a harlot." I told my husband about this, and my husband was very angry. He forbade me from
going to her house for the rest of my life. I said to him: "Cutting off family ties is not permissible and is forbidden. We must maintain family ties and not cut them off." But he is insistent on his statement. Now I am telling you, O honorable Shaykh, about my problem. Should I obey my husband and cut off ties with my sister and not visit her, or what should I do? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.

A: Obedience to the husband is obligatory, and you must seek your husband's permission when visiting your sister. Persuade him with what is best. If he insists on preventing you from visiting her, you must obey him, because his obedience is obligatory, and there is no sin on you for leaving off the visit. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
