Q: The opinions of most mosque imams and shaykhs have converged on the fact that the supplication in the marriage contract or in naming the newborn is to be done only with the Prayer of al-Fatih, that is: (O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad, the Opener of what was closed, and the Closer of what preceded... etc.). What is the ruling on this?
A: The Prayer of al-Fatih has no basis in the Shari'ah, and what has no basis in the Shari'ah is a religious innovation; because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 1718b , and because of the phrases it contains which involve exaggeration regarding the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih al-Bukhari 3445 . Sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is prescribed by the consensus of the Muslims, and its formula is known in the Prophetic hadiths. For this, one should refer to books such as (Jala' al-Afham fi al-Salah wa al-Salam 'ala Khayr al-Anam)
(al-Afham fi al-Salah wa al-Salam 'ala Khayr al-Anam) by Imam Ibn al-Qayyim, to know the prescribed prayer upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and its phrases, which are reported in the two Sahihs and others. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
