The first question of Fatwa number ( 10737 )
Q1: A dear friend of mine came to me asking about a man who proposed to marry one of his relatives. Should I tell him the truth, even if the truth may not be in the suitor's favor, or what should I do? I know that if I lie to this friend, the outcome will not be good, and it may lead to a severance of ties.
A1: If someone is asked about a person for a legitimate Shari'ah purpose, it is obligatory for the one asked to state what he knows about him according to the actual truth, and it is not permissible for him to lie to the questioner. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
