Traveling of an elderly woman without a mahram
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 14165 )
Q: I have an elderly grandmother in one of the Arab countries who wants to travel to these sacred lands, but they do not allow her entry except with a mahram, and she has only one son who lives with her, who has a wife and seven children, all of whom are young, so we are unable to bring her in except in a manner that is considered
as bribery in all cases. Is that permissible? Knowing that she has fallen into major shirk, which takes one out of the religion, may Allah protect us from it, and she is ignorant of this. I want her to come so that I can teach her about it and instill in her the correct creed, and she is afflicted with illnesses that only Allah knows about. Please answer us on this, and may Allah reward you with good.
A: It is not permissible for a woman to travel except with a mahram. If it is possible for her to go and for you or any of her mahrams to bring her by a lawful means, that is good. However, by means of bribery, it is not permissible. You should make du'a' for your grandmother for guidance, and send her some appropriate tapes of sermons and lectures. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
