Fatwa No. ( 6197 )
Q: My father bought about seven goats with my mother's consent, desiring their milk. My mother was the primary person responsible for the house and what was in it, including feeding and watering the sheep by virtue of her management of the household.
Out of her concern that nothing would be held against her for the starvation of those goats, she sometimes wished that other women in the house, among her three sons' wives and her daughters, would do it, though she did not command them to. On one day of the blessed month of Ramadan, we did not eat the pre-dawn meal due to a lack of appetite. This mother is afflicted with asthma, though it is not chronic, but one of its results is that she gets angry. Then those goats entered the house into some of the rooms and onto some of the belongings. The mother was very angry, partly at the goats and partly at some of the family members for not cooperating with her. In this situation, and as a result of what was mentioned, she cursed the goats and whoever brought them, and then she cursed herself if she went to feed them or water them. All of this was while suffering from the fatigue of fasting. However, the next day, out of fear of Allah, she returned and fed them, watered them, and let them graze. The father heard her uttering the curses, so he also became angry at the mother, boycotted her, and secluded himself in one of the corners of the house, because a doubt arose in his mind regarding the viability of living with the mother due to the aforementioned cursing. Since we are a large group, it is difficult for us to have a disagreement between the parents and for our father to boycott the mother. As for the goats, I sold some of them, and my father left their value with me, while the rest are still in the house. O Master of Generosity: The disagreement between the parents is very difficult for us.
Very difficult, and due to the father's seclusion, I took the initiative to submit this to your Eminence through the head of the Commission for Promoting Virtue and Preventing Vice in Bani 'Amr via Abha , who is the only one I informed, and I requested that he forward my papers and return them through him to inform me. Is anything required of my parents, either my father or my mother, regarding this story? And so that we may seek to resolve the disagreement, may Allah prolong your righteous work.
A: If the situation is as described, then your mother should seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him for the cursing that came from her, and she should seek your father's forgiveness. Nothing is required of her other than that, whether the sheep remain or are sold, and nothing is required of her regarding feeding them if they remain. We advise her to gather and deal with kindness. There is no harm in your father enjoying your mother and her enjoying him, because the cursing did not remove her from his marriage bond, and it is not in the ruling of divorce. There is no harm in the sheep remaining, because your mother's cursing of them does not necessitate their removal from your father's ownership. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
