Ruling on a Woman Attending Wedding Parties and Birthdays
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fourth question of Fatwa No. ( 1938 )
Q4: What is the ruling on a woman attending wedding parties and birthdays, given that they are an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance, and that some of the aforementioned parties include female singers to pass the night? Is it forbidden for a woman to attend them if her purpose is to see the bride and to honor the bride’s family, rather than to listen to the singer?
A4: If the wedding parties are free from what is forbidden, such as the mixing of men and women or lewd singing, or if she attends and changes the forbidden things therein, then it is permissible for her to attend to share in the joy. In fact, attendance is obligatory if there is a forbidden act that she is able to remove. However, if the parties contain forbidden acts that she is unable to forbid, it is forbidden for her to attend them; due to the generality of the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-An'am 6:70] and His saying: [Luqman 31:6] and the hadiths regarding the condemnation of singing and musical instruments. As for birthdays, it is not permissible for a Muslim man or woman to attend them; because they are an innovation, except if her attendance is to forbid them and to clarify Allah’s ruling regarding them.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

And leave those who take their religion as amusement and diversion and whom the worldly life has deluded. But remind with the Qur'an, lest a soul be given up to destruction for what it earned; it will have other than Allah no protector and no intercessor
And of the people is he who buys the amusement of speech to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledge and who takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
