Preventing pregnancy without the husband's knowledge
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 1584 )
Q: A man married a woman after her first husband, and she had an infant daughter with him. Is it permissible for her to take pills for a full year to prevent pregnancy from the second husband without his consent? She is known to be in good health that does not hinder pregnancy, so is it permissible or not?
A: Family planning is absolutely forbidden; because it contradicts what came in the Shari'ah
regarding the prohibition of seclusion, the severity of that prohibition, and the encouragement of marrying women who are fertile and loving. Therefore, taking contraceptive pills is forbidden except in rare individual cases that have no general application, such as a situation where the pregnant woman is facing an abnormal delivery and is compelled to undergo a surgical operation to extract the child, or if the woman is in danger from pregnancy due to illness or the like. This does not apply to the case of the woman mentioned in the question, so it is not permissible for her to cause the prevention of pregnancy. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
