Fatwa No. ( 15121 )
Praise be to Allah alone, and may peace and blessings be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. After that: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the General President from the Honorable Director of King Khalid Hospital in Najran, and referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars, with number (230) and date 13 \ 1 \ 1413 AH. The letter stated: We enclose for your Excellency the medical report concerning the patient (R.A.Y), a 24-year-old Saudi woman, for whom the doctors deem it necessary to perform a surgical operation (permanent tubal ligation). Attached is the consent of the patient and her husband to perform the operation. We hope your Excellency will kindly review and provide a ruling. The text of the attached report, signed by three doctors and the hospital director, is as follows:
(The patient visited the hospital on 23 \ 12 \ 1412 AH, and she was in her eighth month of her fourth pregnancy. Her medical history includes delivery by cesarean section in the previous three pregnancies, and she requires delivery by cesarean section again in this fourth pregnancy, and in any future pregnancy, which exposes her to the risk of uterine rupture. The patient needs to undergo a permanent ligation of the fallopian tubes to the uterus so that her life is not exposed to danger, noting that she has three living children.
After the Committee studied it, it answered: It approved performing the uterine ligation operation; to avert the danger mentioned in the report. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
