Q: I hope you will inform me about my dear father’s will, a copy of which is attached. Is it possible to offer the sacrificial animal without paying the third? Is it possible to pay the third and take a sacrificial animal from it every year until the third is exhausted? Is it possible to spend from the third on good deeds, such as building mosques or furnishing them, while maintaining the sacrificial animal? I hope you will clarify this.

A: One does not suffice with the sacrificial animal in place of the third; rather, the third must be increased and invested as much as possible, and a sacrificial animal is to be offered from it every year. Any surplus from its yield is to be spent on acts of righteousness, such as building a mosque, repairing it, furnishing it, or participating in such efforts as much as possible. If it is possible to purchase real estate with it and spend its yield on the aforementioned sacrificial animal, with any surplus spent on acts of righteousness, that is more enduring for the bequest and more cautious. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
