Fatwa number ( 8192 )
Q: We are members of one of the centers of Islamic culture. We collected donations from our generous brothers to complete the construction and maintenance of a mosque in a specific village. By the grace of Allah the Exalted, we have completed the construction of this mosque, and praise be to Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Several thousand rupees from those donations remain with this Islamic culture center. Is it permissible for this center to spend the remainder of these donations on other important matters in that same village, such as opening a reading room, building a religious school, assisting orphans, and providing relief to the disabled, and other things that this center does in that same village? This center is in great need of funds and of collecting donations for such matters, especially for eliminating religious innovations and superstitions, because this village is full of associating partners with Allah, superstitions, and the traditions of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance. Is it permissible to spend it on these matters or not? If you say it is not permissible, what should we do with this remainder? It is worth noting that our intention when collecting the donations was to spend the remainder on the matters mentioned above. I ask you to be kind enough to provide a detailed answer so that we may be among those who listen to the statement and then follow the best of it. And Allah is a witness to what we say.
A: It is obligatory to spend the aforementioned money, which is the remainder from building the mosque, on the maintenance and repair of the mosque. If the school and the reading room are attached to the mosque, it may be spent on their construction and maintenance. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
