Fasting for one suffering from colitis

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 2502 )
Q: I am a man suffering from a stomach ailment (colitis) and I am unable to refrain from eating and drinking for more than two hours. The illness began with me in the year 1390 AH, and I have now been unable to fast Ramadan for seven years. Every year I hope for health from Allah so that I may fast. I have sought treatment in several countries, but the matter is in the hands of Allah alone. Out of fear of dying while I have not fasted during this period, I am compelled to ask your eminence: is there
an expiation upon me? So that I may be clear about my religion, I request that you issue a fatwa or refer my case to the appropriate authority to give me the necessary ruling. May Allah guide you to all good.

A: If the situation is as you described, namely that the illness has persisted with you and you are unable to fast, it is sufficient for you to feed a poor person for each day you broke your fast in Ramadan during those years. The amount is half a sa' of wheat, dates, rice, corn, or the like of what you feed your family. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
