Fasting for a heart patient and the amount of expiation

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 8589 )
Q: I inform your Eminence that I am a man who is eighty years old and suffering from an artery disease and a heart condition , and I was unable to fast the month of Ramadan in the year 1404 AH, last year. I paid out three bags of wheat to three needy families in our village. The total of the three bags is (thirty-four mudds). This year as well, I do not know whether I can fast it or whether I cannot; Allah knows best. Therefore, I ask your Eminence to issue a ruling on what has been mentioned, as I am not at peace until after your Eminence has issued a ruling on that?
A: If the reality is as you mentioned, that you are eighty years old and suffering from an artery and heart disease, and you broke your fast in last year's Ramadan
due to your inability to fast, then there is no blame on you for breaking the fast. It suffices you for the fidyah to feed one poor person for every day you broke your fast, and its amount is half a sa', which is approximately one and a half kilograms of rice or wheat or the like of what is usually eaten in your country. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
