The first question of Fatwa No. ( 5603 )
Q1: I am Marzuq al-Naif al-Abd al-Aziz Al Saud. I used to work as a lawyer and a follow-up agent, but I was struck by gangrene, which led to the amputation of one of my legs, and I stopped working. I have rights owed to me by people, and they have rights owed to me. I have forgiven what belongs to me, but some people have not contacted me to collect what belongs to them, and I do not know their locations due to people moving from their places. The total amount is around three thousand riyals, scattered among them. My question is: Is it valid for me to give it in charity on behalf of its owners, and if they come to me in the future, I will pay it to them? Because I am well-off, praise be to Allah, and what is required is the clearing of one's conscience?
A1: You may give this amount in charity on behalf of its owners. If one of them comes to you, inform him that you gave it in charity on his behalf. If he is pleased with that, it is good; otherwise, return it to him, and you will have the reward of it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
