Fatwa No. ( 17438 )
Q: I bought a car for nine thousand riyals in installments, and I do not know the owner of the car. This was in the year 1394 AH. He knew my address, but because I was dismissed from my job and moved from Riyadh to the western region, I lost contact with him. He did not contact me, and I do not know his full name or his address. Now I want to clear my conscience, so what should I do?
A: You are obligated to search for the owner of the amount in your possession by advertising in the newspapers and by asking those you think know him from the people of the town where he is. If you do not find him after making this effort to identify him, give charity
with the amount with the intention that the reward belongs to its owner, or place it in a charitable project. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
