The questioner : A questioner says: Some people have debts and have not performed the Hajj of Islam, but Hajj does not burden them, because they take a tent with them and their food from their homes, and they do not incur any cost except the price of gasoline. If they join a group, they do not pay more than an amount of about twenty riyals. Is it obligatory for them to perform Hajj and do so individually, because they do not have to offer a sacrificial animal in this case?
The Shaykh : It is not obligatory for them to perform Hajj. As long as they have a debt remaining, Hajj is not obligatory, even if its costs are light. Except for a man who goes with the pilgrims to serve them and they give him a wage for this service; in that case, we may say that he has earned money with which he can pay off his debt from this Hajj. We say there is no harm in his performing Hajj. But as for a person from whom Hajj takes even a small amount, let him praise Allah for his well-being and pay off his debt before his Hajj.
