The questioner : May Allah reward the honorableThe Shaykh : I am the imam of a mosque and I address the congregation after the 'Asr and 'Isha' prayers continuously, without exception on any day of the week, but some of the elderly people disapprove of my speaking on Friday on the grounds that the shaykhs they lived with dislike it. Is there a Shari'ah ruling on this?
The Shaykh : First: if the lessons he delivers are sermons, he should not preach to the people every day, for that will bore them, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would alternate his preaching to his Companions. However, if they are academic lessons, there is nothing wrong with continuing every day. Our shaykhs who did not read or teach the people on Friday did so on the grounds that they did not want to bore the people, because the people had heard the Friday sermon and were content with it as a sermon, and content with it as jurisprudence. Therefore, our scholars whom we knew did not address the people on Friday after 'Asr, being content with what? Answer? Being content with the Friday sermon. Yes, but if a person does it, there is nothing on him, meaning: if a person starts teaching the people every 'Asr, including Friday, there is nothing wrong with it.
