Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The second question of Fatwa No. ( 6620 )
Q2: A woman who is 85 years old, advanced in age, and ill is bedridden and unable to stand, even to relieve herself. The question is: Is prayer and fasting obligatory upon her? Please inform us. May Allah reward you with good.
A2: If her condition is as described, prayer is obligatory upon her if she is of sound mind and can control the actions of prayer, performing them according to her ability, even by gesturing. This is based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:[At-Taghabun 64:16] and His saying: [Al-Baqarah 2:286] and what is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Sahih al-Bukhari 7288 , and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) to 'Imran ibn Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him): Sunan Abi Dawud 952Sahih (Al-Albani) narrated by al-Bukhari , and added by al-Nasa'i with a sound chain
. And if she is able to fast, she should fast. If fasting is difficult for her, she should feed a poor person for each day, and there is no making up of fasts required of her. It suffices for the feeding to give half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of wheat, rice, or similar staple food that they are accustomed to eating, for each day, to the poor. However, if she is not of sound mind, there is no prayer or fasting upon her. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

So fear Allah as much as you are able
فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْAllah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity
لاَ يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلا وُسْعَهَاAnd if I order you to do something, then do of it as much as you can.
إذا أمرتكم بأمر فأتوا منه ما استطعتمoffer prayer in standing condition; if you are unable to do so, then in sitting condition: if you are then at your side
صل قائمًا فإن لم تستطع فقاعدًا، فإن لم تستطع فعلى جنبIf you cannot do so, then lying on your side
فإن لم تستطع فمستلقيًا
