Q: My father is over seventy years old, and for the past three years he has been afflicted with an illness that I hope is a mercy from Allah and an expiation for his sins, to the point that it has prevented him from fasting. If he fasts, his hearing, sight, and life are at risk. In Ramadan, if he is unable to perform the obligatory fast, please advise us on what is required of him.
A1: If your father’s condition is as you described, fasting Ramadan is not obligatory for him, and he is granted a dispensation to break the fast. It is obligatory for him to feed one poor person for every day he breaks his fast in Ramadan, with half a sa' of wheat, dates, rice, or something similar to what his family eats; based on the saying of Allah, the Exalted:[At-Taghabun 64:16] and His saying, the Exalted: [Al-Baqarah 2:286] And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
