Giving zakah to a sister’s daughter
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 11158 )
Q: I have a sister’s daughter who was struck with polio and, being young, became completely disabled in her right leg. She learned the craft of sewing
which she practices in her father’s house, earning a decent salary from which she could live if her health allowed her to do so. Her father is alive and well, with a moderate income, and she has young brothers, each of whom is concerned only with himself. This girl is not married (and who would marry a paralyzed girl?). Is it permissible for me to give her from my zakah to buy a piece of gold or a piece of land, or the like, to be a support for her against the trials of this world and its problems? May Allah reward you with good.
A1: It is not permissible for you to give zakah to the aforementioned girl as long as she has a salary from her sewing craft and her father has a moderate income. It is obligatory for her father to provide her with what secures her maintenance. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
