Q: Please inform your Eminence that I had fifteen camels, and a lunar year passed over them, but I did not pay their zakah. Then they all got lost, and I have none of them left now. I do not know if I owe an expiation or anything else? Please advise us, may Allah reward you with good.
A: If the situation is as you described, it is obligatory for you to pay the zakah on these camels. The amount is three sheep for each year, provided they were grazing; that is, grazing for the entire lunar year or most of it. You should hasten to pay it out, seeking reward and fearing punishment. After that, nothing is required of you except repentance and seeking forgiveness for the delay that occurred on your part.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
