Standing as an Honor for the Souls of the Martyrs
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fourth question of Fatwa No. ( 1674 )
Q4: Is it permissible to stand in silence for a minute, for example, as a salute to the martyrs? Since when a certain ceremony begins, people stand in silence for a minute in mourning or as an honor for the souls of the martyrs.
A4: What some people do of standing in silence for a period of time as a salute to the martyrs, or to the dignitaries, or as an honor and respect for their souls, and mourning for them, and lowering the flags, is among the reprehensible matters and the newly invented innovations that were not in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), nor in the time of his Companions, nor the righteous predecessors. It does not agree with the etiquettes of tawhid (the oneness of Allah), nor with the sincerity of glorifying Allah. Rather, some ignorant Muslims, ignorant of their religion, followed those who innovated it from among the disbelievers, and they imitated them in their ugly customs, and their exaggeration in their leaders and dignitaries, whether living or dead. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade imitating them. What is known in Islam regarding the rights of its people is supplicating for the dead Muslims, giving charity on their behalf, mentioning their good qualities, and refraining from their bad qualities... to many of the etiquettes that Islam has explained and encouraged the Muslim to observe with his brothers, whether living or dead. Standing in mourning in silence as a salute to the martyrs or the dignitaries is not among them.
Rather, this is something that the foundations of Islam reject. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
