The second question of Fatwa number ( 3534 )
Q2: Is tayammum (dry ablution with clean earth) valid for one who takes a stone the size of an egg and passes it over his hands, then wipes with them?
Vol. 2: All praise is due to Allah alone, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger, his family, and his Companions. As for what follows: The principle is that one who intends to perform tayammum (dry ablution with clean earth) should do so with pure earth that has dust which sticks to the hand. What indicates this principle is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with itفَتَيَمَّمُوا صَعِيدًا طَيِّبًا فَامْسَحُوا بِوُجُوهِكُمْ وَأَيْدِيكُمْ مِنْهُ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
. Wiping with any of these is not achieved unless it has dust that sticks to the hand. And al-Shafi'i narrated in his Musnad, from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I was given what was not given to any prophet of the prophets of Allah: earth was made for me a means of purificationأعطيت ما لم يعط نبي من أنبياء الله: جعل لي التراب طهورًا
... the hadith. It was narrated by Ahmad . If anything other than earth were purifying, he would have mentioned it among what Allah the Exalted bestowed upon him. However, if one is in a land where there is no earth, it suffices for him to perform tayammum with what is there of sand and the like. As for the stone you mentioned, using it for tayammum is not sufficient.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
