Delaying the Prayer of the Two Festivals from the Day of the Festival
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 1944 )
Q: Is it permissible to delay the Prayer of the Festival from the night of the sighting of the Shawwal crescent to the second day, so that all Muslim workers in factories and offices can obtain a holiday for the festival day from their managers? Since the day of the festival is not known to them in advance,
it is difficult for them to inform the managers of a specific day for the holiday.
A: The Prayer of the Two Festivals is a collective obligation; if a sufficient number of people perform it, the sin is lifted from the rest. Some scholars held that it is an individual obligation, like the Friday prayer. Since the Islamic Center performs the Festival Prayer based on the sighting of the crescent, this prayer discharges the collective obligation for those who did not attend it. It is not permissible to delay it to the second or third day of Shawwal in order for all Muslims in London to attend it, because this delay is contrary to the consensus of the Companions and those who came after them, for we do not know of any scholar who said this. However, it is permissible to delay it to the second day if they did not learn of the festival until after the sun had passed its zenith. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
