The second question of Fatwa No. ( 7929 ):
Q2: The saying of Allah the Exalted:
and they receive good tidings about those [to be martyred] after them who have not yet joined themوَيَسْتَبْشِرُونَ بِالَّذِينَ لَمْ يَلْحَقُوا بِهِمْ مِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ
[Ali 'Imran 3:170]
, what is the interpretation of this noble verse?

A2: Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his interpretation of this verse: "They are happy with the blessing and joy they are in, and they rejoice in their brothers who are killed after them in the cause of Allah, that they will precede them, and that they do not fear what is before them nor grieve over what they left behind them. We ask Allah for Paradise." And Muhammad ibn Ishaq said:
And they rejoiceوَيَسْتَبْشِرُونَ
Meaning: They are pleased with the joining of their brothers who joined them in their previous struggle in jihad, so that they may share with them in the reward of Allah that He has given them. Al-Suddi said: The martyr is given a book in which it is written: So-and-so will precede you on such-and-such a day, and so-and-so will precede you on such-and-such a day, and he is pleased with that just as the people of this world are pleased when their absent ones arrive.
Sa'id ibn Jubayr said: When they entered Paradise and saw what was in it of honor for the martyrs, they said: "Oh, if only our brothers in this world knew what we have come to know of honor. If they were to witness the battle, they would engage in it with their own selves until they are martyred and attain what we have attained of good." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed of their matter and the honor they are in, and He informed them—meaning their Lord—saying: "I have revealed to your Prophet and informed him of your matter and what you are in, so rejoice in that." That is His saying:
and they receive good tidings about those [to be martyred] after them who have not yet joined themوَيَسْتَبْشِرُونَ بِالَّذِينَ لَمْ يَلْحَقُوا بِهِمْ مِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ
[Ali 'Imran 3:170]
the verse. It is established in the two Sahihs from Anas regarding the story of the people of Bir Ma'unah , the seventy from the Ansar who were killed in a single day, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made qunut in prayer, invoking against those who killed them and cursing them. Anas said: And a Quran was revealed concerning them which we recited until it was abrogated: "Convey to our people that we have met our Lord and He was pleased with us and we were pleased." And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
