The second question of Fatwa No. ( 5004 ):
Q2: Who are the three who were left behind by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?
A2 : They are: Ka'b ibn Malik al-Sulami , Murarah ibn al-Rabi' al-'Amiri , and Hilaal ibn Umayyah al-Waqifi , all of whom were from the Ansar (may Allah be pleased with them). The meaning of the phrase "who were left behind" is not that they lagged behind in the expedition to Tabuk , but rather that they did not offer a false excuse like the hypocrites; instead, they told the truth, so they were delayed and left behind until Allah revealed something concerning them. Allah then revealed His acceptance of their repentance in the verse:[At-Tawbah 9:118]
And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

And [He also forgave] the three who were left behind [and regretted their error] to the point that the earth closed in on them in spite of its vastness and their souls confined them and they were certain that there is no refuge from Allah except in Him. Then He turned to them so they could repent. Indeed, Allah is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.
وَعَلَى الثَّلاثَةِ الَّذِينَ خُلِّفُوا حَتَّى إِذَا ضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الأَرْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ وَضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ أَنْفُسُهُمْ وَظَنُّوا أَنْ لاَ مَلْجَأَ مِنَ اللَّهِ إِلا إِلَيْهِ ثُمَّ تَابَ عَلَيْهِمْ لِيَتُوبُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُAnd success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
