Swearing by other than Allah

The second question of Fatwa No. ( 6910 ):
Q2: Some Muslims whom we know say certain words — in the knowledge of tawhid (the oneness of Allah), these are considered shirk (associating partners with Allah) — such as saying “By my mother’s head” or “Praise be to Allah and my master Dawud.” They say this in jest. Should this speech be taken at face value?
A2: It is not permissible to swear by other than Allah, such as saying “By my mother’s head,” nor
is it permissible to equate Allah with other than Him by saying “Praise be to Allah and my master Dawud”; for this is one of the types of shirk (associating partners with Allah). Rather, one should say “Praise be to Allah alone,” or say “Praise be to Allah, then to my master Dawud.” Allah the Exalted said:
So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous work and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone."فَمَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُو لِقَاءَ رَبِّهِ فَلْيَعْمَلْ عَمَلا صَالِحًا وَلاَ يُشْرِكْ بِعِبَادَةِ رَبِّهِ أَحَدًا
[Al-Kahf 18:110]
A man said, to the Prophet, 'Whatever Allah wills and you will.' He said, 'You have put an equal with Allah. It is what Allah alone wills.'ولما قال رجل للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: ما شاء الله وشئت، قال: أجعلتني لله ندًّا، بل ما شاء الله وحده
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 783
narrated by al-Nasa'i . This hadith clarifies that it is shirk; because the word connected by the conjunction “and” equates the connected word with the word it is connected to; for the conjunction “and” is established for absolute combination. Therefore, it is not permissible for us to make the created like the Creator in any aspect of divinity or lordship, even in the least thing. This is more protective of the sanctity of tawhid (the oneness of Allah) and blocks the paths of shirk in speech, just as the paths of shirk in actions have been blocked, as in his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Allah cursed the Jews and the Christians that they took the graves of their prophets as mosquesلعن الله اليهود والنصارى اتخذوا قبور أنبيائهم مساجد
Sahih Muslim 529
, and among that is his prohibition (peace and blessings be upon him) of plastering graves and building upon them. It is authentically reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Do not say: "What Allah wills and so and so wills," but say: "What Allah wills and afterwards so and so wills.لا تقولوا: ما شاء الله وشاء فلان، ولكن قولوا: ما شاء الله ثم شاء فلان
Sunan Abi Dawud 4980Sahih (Al-Albani)
,
This indicates the permissibility of this formulation, and the first indicates perfection, which is saying “What Allah willed alone.” And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
